A Schottky barrier diode, also called Schottky diode, is a metal-semiconductor diode that possesses a low forward voltage drop and a highly rapid switching speed. The Schottky diode is a different type of semiconductor diode; however, its forward voltage drop is substantially less than that of a conventional silicon PN-junction diode. The current flows in the forward direction when the required forward voltage is applied. A silicon PN- diode has forward voltage of 600-700 mv, while a Schottky diode has forward voltage of 150-450 mv and hence, a Schottky diode has high switching speed and better system efficiency. A metal semiconductor junction is formed between the metal and semiconductor, creating a Schottky diode. Metals that are widely used include molybdenum, platinum, chromium or tungsten, and silicides.
