A Schottky barrier diode, also called Schottky diode, is a metal-semiconductor diode that possesses a low forward voltage drop and a highly rapid switching speed. The Schottky diode is a different type of semiconductor diode; however, its forward voltage drop is substantially less than that of a conventional silicon PN-junction diode. The current flows in the forward direction when the required forward voltage is applied. A silicon PN- diode has forward voltage of 600-700 mv, while a Schottky diode has forward voltage of 150-450 mv and hence, a Schottky diode has high switching speed and better system efficiency. A metal semiconductor junction is formed between the metal and semiconductor, creating a Schottky diode. Metals that are widely used include molybdenum, platinum, chromium or tungsten, and silicides.
January 25, 2021: New Vishay Intertechnology 650 V SiC Schottky Diodes Increase Efficiency for High Frequency Applications
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today introduced 10 new 650 V silicon carbide (SiC) Schottky diodes. Featuring a merged PIN Schottky (MPS) design, the Vishay Semiconductors devices are designed to increase the efficiency of high frequency applications by reducing switching losses regardless of the effects from temperature variances, allowing the diodes to operate at higher temperatures.
