Resistance thermometers, also called resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), is a sensor used to measure temperature, using the principle that the resistance of a metal with temperature changes. In practice, the electric current is transmitted through a piece of metal (RTD element or resistor) located close to the area where the temperature is measured. The value of resistance of the RTD element is then measured by the instrument. The resistance value is then correlated with known resistance temperature based on the characteristics of the RTD element.
